Papers were originally discussed at the Pre-Congress Conference on Medical Anthropology, held on August 31st 1973 at the Stritch School of Medicine of Loyola, University of Chicago. Summary position papers from these work sessions were presented at the IXth International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences held in Chicago in 1973, and these papers were edited to introduce each section of the ICAES papers in this volume.
