The author first considers some of the factors determining the growth of school enrollment; needs for estimating future school enrollment; and the characteristics of short-term, medium-term, and long-term estimates. Some of the terms used in connection with estimates of future school enrollment are then defined; the types of basic data needed are specified; and the kinds of methods generally used are explained briefly. Three case studies are presented that estimate future school enrollment in the developing countries of Colombia, the Philippines, and the Sudan. These case studies are intended to illustrate the application and adaptation of certain methods to suit the needs of particular situations. The presentation concludes with some illustrative examples from actual projections of school enrollments taken from published sources in three developed countries -- the United States, New Zealand, and France.
